How David Warner healthy word of advice helped Aaron Finch make some timely amends in Colombo on Tuesday.
David Warner revealed a healthy word of advice he shared with his Australian white-ball skipper and longstanding opening partner, Aaron Finch, while the right-hander was struggling for form during the recent IPL.
Finch, who walked into the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) set-up as a replacement for Alex Hales, made only 86 runs from his five innings of the IPL 2022 before finding himself on the sidelines. The display of almost no rhythm to his batting in the IPL had been a theme to Finch’s game for nearly a year.
During the tournament in India, where Warner was playing for the Delhi Capitals (DC), he sent his friend a word of suggestion on the technical front. Having seen Finch bat closely over the years, especially how he tends to feel wary of LBW on incoming balls, Warner told his partner not to be overly reactive to one form of dismissal.
Finch, David Warner spotted, had been trying to go too far across the ball to try and avoid the LBW instances, with fast-bowlers aiming to pigeonhole him in front of the stumps.
How David Warner’s technical advice helped Aaron Finch make amends in Colombo
“I just kept in touch with him, we always do,” David Warner told the press after the opening T20I versus Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday (June 7), as quoted by cricket.com.au. “We always support each other as much as we can. If we see little things, we always try help each other out by dropping him a message.”
For Warner, Finch was not letting the ball unveil its tricks and not playing late. Feeling anxious of the LBW, the right-hander instead went at the ball and moved across to the off-side too much, which, while helping him evade leg before calls, halted his flow and further diminished his range.
“I just said to him not to walk out into the ball, let the ball actually do its work in the air,” Warner said.
“And if they want to bowl nice and full and you stay still and keep that leg stump line, you’re going to get full contact with the ball, and if it swings late, it’s going to go down leg.”
“He was probably moving a little too much, he was walking straight into the line of the ball and was still moving at the time of the delivery, and when you’re a batter you don’t want to really do that unless you’re actually physically charging.”

Taking the word of advice from his partner into practice, Finch showcased some encouraging signs of returning to form with a fine knock of 61* off 40 balls in an unbeaten 134-run stand with Warner in Australia’s ten-wicket victory at Colombo in the tour opener.
