The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) led by Rishabh Pant and Delhi Capitals (DC), skippered by Axar Patel locked horns in their opening Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) clash tonight (April 1). It was a low-scoring affair which DC managed to win by six wickets but not before the contest witnessed a fair share of drama.
After being put to bat first, LSG could manage a subpar 141. While it looked like a straightforward chase for Delhi, the situation got complicated after they ended up losing four wickets in the powerplay. Nevertheless, an unbeaten 70* from Sameer Rizvi ensured DC crossed the finish line in the end comfortably.
Let’s take a look at three key takeaways from the LSG vs DC clash.
While it was expected that LSG would persist with their highly successful overseas opening duo of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh from last season, skipper Rishabh Pant stunned everyone when he walked out to open the innings. Notably, Markram and Marsh were the second-highest scoring opening pair in IPL 2025, amassing 574 runs in 12 innings comprising four fifty-plus stands and one century partnership.
Nevertheless, Pant struggled with the bat last season and had also experimented with his position. While he batted mostly at 4, he had also come out later while managing to score a century at No.3 in their final game of IPL 2025, which raised speculation over his batting slot in IPL 2026. However, took the onus of opening alongside Mitchell Marsh but the move did not work out for the left-hander as he fell prey to an unfortunate dismissal. Rishabh Pant departed cheaply for 7 after being run out by Mukesh Kumar off his own bowling, as he managed to get a fingertip off a Mitchell Marsh defence that was headed towards the wicket at the non-striker’s end.

LSG have a strong pool of domestic pacers like Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Akash Singh, Arjun Tendulkar, Naman Tiwari alongside India internationals like Mohammed Shami and Avesh Khan. The depth of the pace battery and the talent came to the fore after Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav produced stunning spells against DC.
Defending a low target of 142, Mohsin and Prince kept LSG’s hopes alive with excellent first spells which saw DC lose four wickets in the powerplay. Out of the four, the duo took three wickets with Prince’s figures reading 2/14 in 2 overs while Mohsin had 1/2 in 2 overs.
Notably, LSG had missed the services of Mohsin Khan last season after he was ruled out due to injury while Prince featured in just six games.
With the loss of early wickets in the powerplay, DC decided to use Sameer Rizvi as impact player and back him after his fifty in the final game of the last season. Sameer repaid the faith with a matchwinning knock of 70*(47).
He formed a crucial 119-run stand with Tristan Stubbs (39 off 32) at the other end and made sure DC did not lose any more wickets before propelling the side to an easy win with six wickets and 17 balls left.
