Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has called out Sunrisers Hyderabad for not giving Abhishek Sharma the captaincy role in IPL 2026.
Currently, SRH captain Pat Cummins is recovering from a back injury and will miss some matches this season. Because of this, the team decided to appoint Ishan Kishan as the stand in captain, while Abhishek Sharma has been named vice captain.
While speaking on Sports Tak, former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh said that Abhishek Sharma has been part of Sunrisers Hyderabad for seven years and has also led Punjab in domestic cricket, but he is still yet to be given the captaincy role.
“Abhishek Sharma has been playing for SRH for the last seven years and has been performing well for them. He has given his heart and soul to the team. He is also captaining at the state level, but he still hasn’t been given the captaincy of SRH,” Yuvraj Singh said.
The opening batter made his SRH debut in 2019 and has been with the team since then. He has played 75 matches for them and scored 1,760 runs in 72 innings. In the current squad, he is the player with the most matches for SRH.
Abhishek Sharma has led Punjab in both the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the last two seasons, showing that he has leadership experience.
However, Sunrisers Hyderabad went with Ishan Kishan as captain, mainly because he recently led his state Jharkhand to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. His recent success as a captain and his experience at the top level could be the reason why the team trusted him with the role over Abhishek.

Ishan Kishan’s captaincy for SRH in the IPL began with a loss in their first match against the defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets. Their next game will be against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
It is also known that whenever Pat Cummins returns to the XI, he will lead the side. But for players like Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, having a World Cup winning captain in the squad will help them a lot in building their leadership skills.
