They have claimed the Ashes 2025 Boxing Day Test by four wickets.

Trailing 3-0 in the Ashes 2025, England have registered a massive comeback at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The team has finally scripted their maiden Test victory on Australian soil after 15 long years.

England Escapes Ashes 2025 Whitewash Scare With Historic MCG Win

Notably, this is the first red-ball fixture win for England skipper Ben Stokes and the former captain Joe Root in Australia. Though the visitors have garnered multiple controversies throughout the series, it will be etched in the history books as a memorable one as well.

Besides putting an end to their over-a-decade-long victory drought, it also witnessed Root’s maiden hundred down under. England’s last win in Australia had come in January 2011, when they also went on to clinch the series with a scoreline of 1-3.

Youngster Jacob Bethell is the top scorer for the side in his maiden appearance of the series after replacing Ollie Pope. He is also the second-highest run-getter of the fixture (40) after Travis Head (46), as no batter managed to cross the 50-run mark in a low-scoring encounter. The last time it happened in an Ashes Test was back in 1981 at Edgbaston.

However, the MCG pitch has faced immense criticism, as 20 wickets fell on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test. Historically, only four Men’s Tests have secured a two-day finish in Australia so far, with two of them coming in the ongoing Ashes 2025. This was the second such instance following a rapid finish in the series opener at the Optus Stadium.

Ben Stokes Joins Elite List of England Captains to Win Test in Australia

Before the start of the much-anticipated rivalry, the English captain had noted that he wanted to enter the list of “the lucky few captains” who had the rare chance to experience the taste of victory on Australian soil. Though the hosts have already claimed the series with three back-to-back wins, this MCG victory would also be a significant feat for Stokes and Co., especially after enduring successive clean sweeps in the last three tours.

“I have come here absolutely desperate to get home on that plane in January as one of the lucky few captains from England to have come here and been successful,” he had stated.

England would hope to carry on the momentum and replicate a similar outcome as the two sides will lock horns for a final time this series, starting on January 4 in Sydney.
