Ruled Out Of Sri Lanka T20I Series, Jofra Archer Named In England Playing XI; Big Boost For T20 World Cup 2026

Sreejita Sen

Jofra Archer had a fierce outing in the Ashes 2025.

England got a major boost in their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 with the return of speedster Jofra Archer for the upcoming three-match SL vs ENG T20I series. Notably, the short-format series will be the final dress rehearsal for both teams before they head into the ICC event.

However, as for Archer, he was initially not named in the Three Lions squad slated to lock horns with the Islanders due to a side strain he suffered during the Ashes 2025. He was only included in the provisional T20 World Cup 2026 squad but now, he will feature the England Playing XI for the SL vs ENG 1st T20I (on January 30).

Confirming the omission, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement during the squad announcement had mentioned,

“Archer is included in the provisional T20 World Cup squad but will miss the tour of Sri Lanka as he continues his rehabilitation with the England medical team following the left side strain sustained during the third Ashes Test in Adelaide earlier this month.”

After a disappointing Ashes 2025 series, England have bounced back to win the Sri Lanka ODI series by 1-2. Following the 50-over encounters, Harry Brook and Co. will shift their focus to the upcoming three T20Is, starting on January 30.

Updated England squad for SL vs ENG T20Is

Harry Brook (C), Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Ben Duckett, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Rehan Ahmed, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue, and Luke Wood, Jofra Archer.

The injury-prone bowler has missed a large part of the action in limited-over cricket due to injuries. But despite that, Archer has been consistent in both formats. He was carrying on a great run in the ODIs, scalping 11 wickets in his last four appearances, including back-to-back four-fers against South Africa and New Zealand.

The seamer also displayed an impressive comeback in the T20Is. Before missing out on the West Indies series with a thumb injury, he had a decent tour of India in January 2025, comprising six wickets in five matches. However, coming back into England’s T20I line-up after eight months, Archer also struck the Proteas batting order with a match-winning three-wicket haul in the second fixture.
