The unfortunate incident took place in the third over of the first innings. The 23-year-old clutched his left leg and struggled in pain while leaving the field. Captain Dasun Shanaka bowled the remaining two deliveries of the over.

However, the 2014 champions would hope for Pathirana to soon return to the action. Earlier, their key all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the entire tournament. He had also picked up a hamstring injury in their T20 World Cup 2026 opener against Ireland.

Another injury to their frontline seamer, Pathirana, could hugely affect the team’s chances ahead in the mega T20 championship. Currently, Sri Lanka is placed at the top of the table by virtue of two back-to-back wins and a great net run rate of 3.125. But the results against Australia and Zimbabwe in the league-stage fixtures will be crucial in deciding their fate in the Group B qualification scenarios.

Notably, the right-hander has previously missed out on plenty of action due to injuries across international and franchise cricket. Pathirana’s sling bowling action usually puts a lot of stress on his lower body, making him an injury-prone bowler.

Despite the setbacks, the youngster has proved to be a key component of the nation’s T20I setup. Since making his debut in August 2022, Pathirana has snared 40 wickets in 27 innings in the format, including two four-wicket hauls. The Sri Lankan fans would be eager for the latest Matheesha Pathirana injury update and would hope for the player to return to the playing XI for their last group-stage match against Zimbabwe.
