Are Finn Allen and Tim Seifert the Best Opening Pair in T20Is Now?

Chandra Moulee Das

Are Finn Allen and Tim Seifert the Best Opening Pair in T20Is Now? The New Zealand duo have looked in stellar form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 with their record-breaking explosive batting.

After registering the second-highest partnership ever in T20 World Cup history with an unbeaten 175*-run stand in the current edition in a group-stage match against UAE, the Kiwi duo repeated the heroics once again in the semifinal with a 117-run opening stand to blow away the Proteas and help New Zealand book their berth in the summit clash.

Following their latest performances, let’s evaluate where the New Zealand duo ranks amongst the top opening T20I pairs currently.

Are Finn Allen and Tim Seifert the Best Opening Pair in T20Is Now?

Check the detailed analysis below.

Highest average amongst top opening pairs

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert are the second-highest scoring opening pair since 2025 amongst full member nations, with 754 runs in 13 games. However, it is their average which stands out, miles ahead of everyone at 62.83, with the next best being that of Australian duo Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head at 43.09.

While openers might perish early in a bid to provide quick starts, Seifert and Allen’s consistency at the top makes them even more dangerous. Out of the 13 innings they have opened together in T20Is since last year, they have managed to stitch a three-digit partnership twice while crossing the 50-run mark five times.

Equally lethal against different bowling types

In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen dominate against pacers across all other opening pairs, boasting a strike rate of 196.97. South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock rank second with 175.0.

Against spin as well, although the numbers come down, the Blackcaps stars still have the third-highest scoring rate of 147.30 with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh topping the list with 188.57.

The graph below underlines that Finn Allen and Tim Seifert can tackle spin and pace alike, often leaving opposition bowlers clueless once they start going.

Impact in powerplay

In T20Is, the powerplay is the most crucial phase for a batting side and a good score in the first six overs can often decide the final fate of the game. This is where Tim Seifert and Finn Allen has made the most impact.

The Kiwi duo once again top the charts for having the most destructive strike rate of 186.71. They also have an average of 80 with only Marsh and Head edging them with an average of 143. However, the number can be misleading since the Aussie duo could play together in just two games due to their early exit while Allen and Seifert has kept on delivering in the seven innings they have opened together so far in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Where do Finn Allen and Tim Seifert stand?

If we have to rank the top opening pair in T20I currently, apart from Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, the Aussie duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head and South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock come close, eclipsing or closely matching the Kiwi pair in a few metrics. Also, the explosive Indian opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, both incredible batters, have unfortunately failed to combine in the current ICC event.

The verdict thus stands, given how Finn Allen and Tim Seifert are batting, and their ability to take on pace and spin alike and the impact they have in the powerplay, alongside the impressive numbers, ranks as the best opening T20I pair now.
