Young Test batting sensation Sam Konstas was unceremoniously dropped from the recent Australia Central Contract 2026-27. Notably, the 20-year-old made a fiery debut with a fifty in the high-octane Boxing Day Test match against India during the last Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2024. Sam Konstas also stole the headlines after being involved in a heated shoulder-bump with India star Virat Kohli.
Since that game, he has featured in a total of five Tests with his last appearance coming back in July 2025 during a West Indies tour. He was not selected for the Ashes 2025 but now with a gruelling Test season on the horizon for Australia where they play 14 games as part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27) cycle, the decision not to give Sam Konstas a contract stirred quite a debate.

Despite a lean form in his brief international career so far averaging 16.3, which led to the central contract snub, the dynamic right-hander has been consistently scoring runs in domestic cricket. He most recently finished the Sheffield Shield competition as the fifth-highest run-scorer with 660 runs in 10 games, including one century and two fifties.
Addressing the omission, Australia chief selector George Bailey clarified that Sam Konstas remains in future plans despite not being awarded a contract.
Echoing on the same lines, the former Aussie captain turned selector was quoted as saying by ICC,
“I think we can take some positives out of the fact that he was getting consistent starts across those Shield games. Would he have liked to have gone on and scored some big runs out of that? No doubt, once you’ve done the hard work and got those starts. But he remains a player that we’re incredibly interested in.”
He added, “We’ve got an Australia A trip to India later in the year and I imagine as it stands at the moment, he’s a strong chance to be a part of that.
With Australia slated to tour the subcontinent for an extensive five-match series starting January 21, it is anticipated that the Australia A team will travel a bit earlier composed of promising talents and key players, essentially to get game time and to get acclimatised to the playing conditions.
