How Strategic Blunders Cost LSG Against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026

Sandip Pawar

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were outplayed in their opening game of the IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals. The side, led by Rishabh Pant, lost the contest in Lucknow by six wickets after managing only 141 runs on the board.

It was a lackluster performance from the LSG batting unit, with Abdul Samad (36 off 25) top scoring the innings. Bowlers did an excellent job to make a game out of it but their efforts weren’t enough. The team leadership made several strategic mistakes that eventually cost them.

LSG Strategic Blunders Against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026

The Super Giants have a plethora of bowling options in their squad, with multiple quality players having to sit on the bench. After they were asked to bat first by the Capitals, LSG named four pacers in the playing XI – Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, Prince Yadav, and Anrich Nortje.

Digvesh Rathi, their specialist frontline spinner, was not included, and it bit them back. Batting first, they lost wickets at regular intervals and were six down with 105 runs on the board and nearly seven overs still remaining. With none of their pacers being capable of hanging around, they were forced to use the Impact Player substitute on all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmad. He could score only 15 off 16 as he ran out of partners with eight balls left in the innings.

Defending a low total, the Indian pace trio turned up for LSG with the new ball, reducing the Capitals to 26 for 4 inside five overs. But since they used the IP option on Shahbaz, Rathi could not be subbed in, which hampered them significantly.

Pant did his best to frontload his seamers and hide the fifth bowler as much as he could. But eventually he had to turn to Shahbaz. When they had 81 to defend off 66 balls, the left-arm spinner conceded 16 runs in the over, releasing all the pressure off Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs. He later brought on Aiden Markram to fill in those fifth bowler’s overs but he leaked 13 runs as well.

The Anrich Nortje Question

Another decision that didn’t go well for LSG in their Delhi Capitals defeat was playing Anrich Nortje. The South African speedster went for 39 runs in his four overs on a pitch that had some assistance for bowlers. Compared to this, the Indian trio picked up four wickets for 67 runs in 11 overs.

Nortje hasn’t been effective in the IPL for years. Since 2022, he has taken 27 wickets from 25 appearances at an expensive rate of 10.45. His recent form hasn’t been great either, snaring three scalps in the last four games at 10.33 runs per over.

LSG have Mayank Yadav and Avesh Khan in their ranks, who can do a similar role without wasting an overseas spot. The franchise can instead bring in Josh Inglis at number four to bolster the batting unit. This would be a better combination going forward as they look to make the most of their resources.
