IPL 2026: CSK vs PBKS Game Plan – Targeting Punjab Kings Openers With Early Spin

Darpan Jain

Punjab Kings have a solid opening pair, but they can be contained.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) openers, Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, have formed a solid partnership since last year. The two have together accumulated 539 runs at an average of 29.50 and a run rate of 9.45 at the top. In the powerplay, they have collectively scored at a strike rate of 154.22 and hit a boundary every 4.06 deliveries.

Individually, Prabhsimran has 367 runs at an average of 45.87 and a strike rate of 154.20, hitting a boundary every 4.03 deliveries, during the field restrictions. Meanwhile, Priyansh has been more attacking, with a strike rate of 171.07 and a balls-per-boundary ratio of 3.34. He has also lost his wicket more often, averaging just 24.92 due to an ultra-aggressive approach.

How CSK can stop Punjab Kings openers in Chennai

A notable feature of the Punjab Kings opening pair has been their ability to whack pace in the powerplay. They have collectively struck at 157.97 and found the fence every 3.93 balls against fast bowlers. However, spin can trouble them early on.

Last season, spinners broke the pair twice in 13 balls, and they could only score at 69.23. The issue has been that the opponents haven’t really tested them enough with spinners and fed them with pace for most of the powerplay. For instance, Priyansh has faced only 5.88% of spin balls, getting out twice in 12 balls.

Meanwhile, Prabhsimran has faced only 10.92% of spin balls, where he has struck at 119.23 but hasn’t lost his wicket. He has not exactly been fluent, playing around 46.15% dot balls. So, there’s enough evidence to try using spin early on, something teams failed to do consistently last season.

Priyansh, especially, has shown obvious weaknesses against spinners at this level. In IPL, he has averaged just 15.40 and lost his wicket five times in 50 balls. So, targeting the two with spin early on won’t be a bad idea, considering pace has not worked against them anyway.

Where to bowl against Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya

For Priyansh, the plan should be to bowl straighter lines, which troubled him massively last season. On the stump line, he struck at just 85.71 and lost his wicket three times in 21 balls. On other lines, the strike rate surged to 203.44 with just two dismissals across 29 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Prabhsimran has shown vulnerability to spin in the off-stump channel, where both straighter lines and those drifting just outside tend to draw false strokes. On such deliveries, he has struck at just 119.11 and been dismissed six times. He plays around 35.29% false shots on these lines since last year.

CSK have Matthew Short and should also bring in Prashant Veer to use them in the powerplay based on who’s on the strike. They made a tactical error by keeping Prashant out of the main XI against Rajasthan Royals (RR) and shouldn’t make the same mistake again. He might be a better option against both since Priyansh also lost his wicket twice to SLAs in 2025.

Punjab Kings openers can be contained with spin.

Khaleel Ahmed has not been too effective against LHBs in the powerplay, as his average of 51 and an economy rate of 9.49 suggest. So, CSK can look to use additional spin overs early on. Punjab Kings have solid spin batters from No.3 to 5, so they might not be used much in the middle anyway.

They also have Noor Ahmad for that phase, as he might extract some turn off the surface. Frontloading both finger spinners early on should be the right way. That will at least allow them to bowl to relatively weak players of spin when they are new at the crease.
