Shreyas Iyer put one of the finest efforts in the tournament's history.
Shreyas Iyer took an incredible relay catch on the boundary ropes to dismiss Hardik Pandya at the Wankhede Stadium in IPL 2026. It was almost a near-impossible catch, but the Punjab Kings captain somehow grabbed it with an effort of the highest order.
Marco Jansen bowled a length delivery angling across the batter, to which Hardik tried to whack down the ground with a wild slog but could only get the toe end of the bat. The ball was still flying away from Shreyas Iyer, stationed at the long-on region, but he sprinted to his left and took a reverse cup catch while being airborne.
The momentum was still taking him into the boundary cushions. But Iyer did well to release it just in time and pass it to his partner, Xavier Bartlett.
Bartlett kept his eyes on the process all along and calmly caught it to complete one of the most outrageous catches in the tournament’s history. So many things were against Iyer, but he somehow managed to do all of that correctly and showed terrific agility to get a prized wicket of Hardik Pandya at the back end of the innings.
After the catch was completed, Shreyas Iyer started celebrating instantly, and even looked towards the crowd, which was stunned and silent with the effort. He even put his hands on his ears, asking why they were silent and not cheering now.

Notably, Mumbai is his home, and he’s a local boy with all the cricket at this venue. Still, his efforts had left the crowd in disbelief, and Shreyas Iyer surely enjoyed teasing the crowd.
Even Rohit Sharma, sitting near the boundary in the Mumbai Indians’ dugout, couldn’t believe it, stretching his hands towards the PBKS captain. For now, this is surely the best effort from a fielder in IPL 2026, and it will require something special to triumph over it.
It’s indeed unfair that the scorecard and records will show Xavier Bartlett as the original catcher of the ball, but Shreyas Iyer did all the tough part there. Anyway, it was a massive wicket for Punjab Kings, as Hardik Pandya could have added a lot more in the final few deliveries had Iyer not come up with such a gravity-defying effort on the ropes.
